Employee Blog

07/02/2009 — Jobs currently in demand

Even during tough economic times, there are certain jobs that are in demand.

A New York Times articles published last week highlighted some of those jobs.

It came as no surprise to me that welder is one of the job classifications that employers are having difficulties filling.

In addition to welders, other in-demand jobs mentioned in the story were:

  • Critical care nurses.
  •  Electrical linemen.
  •  Special education teachers.
  •  Geotechnical engineers.
  •  Respiratory therapists.
  •  Civil engineers.

The Times article highlights the efforts of a hiring manager at Cianbro Corporation to find 80 highly skilled welders for an oil refinery construction project. It took him 18 months to find the 80 employees, even though his search came at a time of rising unemployment rates.

This type of welding requires a higher skill level than most.

But I can tell you that many of my clients are also looking for welders.

Welders should be in even higher demand in the future because most people working in the field are nearing retirement and not enough young people are going into the field.

If you’ve read this blog, you know that a common theme has been the demand for skilled workers.

And it’s not going away even as the state and national economy try to fight off a recession.
