EconoPlay's September jobs outlook. Diversified Industrial Staffing President Todd Palmer was quoted in the September issue of the Job’s Outlook by Econoplay. For the complete article go to www.econoplay.com. Something for Nothing. Todd Palmer, president of Diversified Industrial Staffing in Detroit, takes umbrage in the way extended unemployment benefits have hurt his business of employing people. “On Monday we had a total of four people, who were all unemployed, not show up for their first day of work at new jobs. Our wonderful system will allow them to collect unemployment benefits, while refusing to work,” he said. He had another guy who turned down a $26 an hour job. “Our client wanted him. He had a great resume. But he wanted to collect unemployment for the rest of the year and take the job in January,” Palmer said. “Unemployment insurance was not designed to be a paid vacation.” The job market is “struggling a little right now.” Part of it is a skills shortage. “We’ve reached a tipping point where there’s more demand than supply in Michigan,” he said. “No worker who has the requisite skills is willing to jump without a guarantee of better wages, benefits, and job security,” he said. “It’s getting hard to find contract labor.” The other side of that coin is employers who are slow to commit. “We get a lot of interviews and not a lot of decisions,” Palmer said. “The biggest thing right now in Michigan is that autoworker unions again have their hands out. They want the wages that they used to have,” he said. “But assembling a car is not a high skill set. I don’t get the concept of over compensating the under‐skilled. On the other hand you can’t have an economy without a viable middle class, so I really can see the conundrum.” Diversified Industrial Staffing is a nationwide recruiting / staffing firm headquartered in Troy, Michigan.
